Founded in 1974 as Community Action Against Rape (CAAR), Signs of HOPE (SOH) began as the combined effort of Florence McClure and Sandra Petta, two women living in Las Vegas who were outraged by the lack of resources and respect for those affected by sexual support and resources they need to move through the process of healing.

    SANE Exams at UMC Hospital

    If you have been sexually assaulted, or think you have been but are not sure, you are encouraged to go to University Medical Center (UMC) Hospital for an exam by a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE).  

    At the time of check-in at triage, tell the hospital employee that you are there for a SANE exam. Currently, UMC is the only hospital in Clark County that offers the SANE exam for adults. If you call to report the crime to the police first, they may be able to transport you to UMC for the exam.

    About the SANE Exam

    The purpose of the SANE exam is to identify and treat any physical injuries you might have sustained during the assault and collect any possible evidence of the crime. 

    You do NOT have to report the crime to law enforcement or pursue charges in order to have the exam done if you are an adult. 

    • If you are a minor, please keep in mind that the SANE nurse and medical personnel are mandated reporters of child abuse.

    • The exam should ideally be done as soon as possible after the assault has occurred, but can be done up to 5 days later even if you have showered, etc. 
    •  
    • You will never be charged for a SANE exam at UMC hospital.

    • SOH Advocates at the hospital can assist with resources, transportation back to your home or where you are staying, and providing clothing if yours is taken for evidence.

    After the assault, if possible, refrain from the following until you have had the exam completed:

    • Showering or bathing

    • Changing clothes

    • Drinking, eating, or chewing gum

    • Smoking

    • Using the restroom or douching


    If you do have clothing, blankets, sheets, or other items which may hold evidence, please put them in a PAPER bag or pillowcase. Do not store items in plastic.
